Securing BD-RIS-Aided Communications via a Friendly Jammer

Abstract

This letter investigates the secrecy performance of a beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS)-aided network. We propose a joint BD-RIS and friendly jammer (BR-FJ) aided scheme, where a base station (BS) transmits confidential signals to a user while a friendly jammer emits artificial noise (AN) signals to disturb an eavesdropper, both via the same BD-RIS. We formulate the secrecy rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming vectors of the BS and friendly jammer, together with the BD-RIS scattering matrix. This problem is solved using an alternating optimization (AO) method, in which the BD-RIS scattering matrix is updated via a projected successive linear approximation (PSLA) algorithm that provides an iterative closed-form solution. Moreover, closed-form solutions are also derived for the transmit beamforming vectors. The simulation results show that the proposed BR-FJ scheme outperforms benchmark schemes using a conventional diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) or operating without a friendly jammer in terms of the secrecy rate.
