• Quartz-rich Huoshan Formation forms a compositionally mature unit on the Great Unconformity surface. • The unit records pre-transgressive erosion and sediment recycling on the North China Craton. • Detrital zircon U-Pb ages (n = 696) constrain a Neoproterozoic maximum depositional age and provenance.
