• Direct upgrading of furfural to 1, 5-pentanediol with a high yield of 51.3% was achieved over a Cu-Co bimetallic catalyst. • Cu-Co alloy efficiently dissociates H2, Lewis acid sites assist selective cleavage of C-O bonds. • DFT calculations indicate Cu-Co synergy stabilizes key intermediates and inhibits competing side pathways.
