• W8-Cu8/Al maintained about 80 % NOx conversion at 250–350 °C under SO2/H2O. • WOx enhanced NH3 adsorption while suppressing SO2 and H2O competitive adsorption. • WOx buffered poison-induced charge redistribution. • WOx alleviates the increase in the energy barrier of rate-determining reactions caused by poisoning.
