• Ultrathin g-C3N4 nanosheets with selenium doping were successfully prepared. • Se doping induces defects to break g-C3N4symmetry, boosting polarization field and charge separation-transfer • Remarkable piezo-photocatalytic H2O2 production and organic water pollutant degradation was achieved. • Piezo-photocatalytic mechanism was revealed by in situ-EPR, in situ-DRIFTS, and DFT.
