• Microstructures of incipient faulting and microseismic damage are preserved in the Bedretto tunnel (Switzerland). • Mylonitic foliation promotes along-strike rupture propagation and restricts the extent of seismic damage. • Pulverization and grain-boundary splitting within the mylonite acts as a seismic energy sink. • Shallow seismic damage in anisotropic rocks may mimic structures typical of more mature faults.
