Although, on first take, the articles in this special issue may look like an indictment of action categorization, a closer examination of the evidence suggests that what is called for is a renewed understanding of action categorization. The keys to this renewed understanding include treating action names as arbitrary labels for identifiable patterns of accountable behavior, recognizing the gradient nature of social behavior in interaction, and acknowledging the cultural and institutional sensitivity of action categorization.
