• Similarity criteria for laser-induced thermo-mechanical responses are derived. • Fourteen dimensionless parameters of the multifield coupling problem are obtained. • Two approximate scaling strategies are established for the incompatible criteria. • Error map for characteristic thickness under different scaling strategies is developed. • Numerical results show that errors between real and scaled model are less than 4 %.
