• Fully-coupled surface–subsurface model resolves concurrent LSWI and VSWI. • Pumping drives super-linear, multi-decadal salt build-up and wedge growth. • Storm surges create early saline pulses whose persistence increases with pumping. • Decomposition-based analysis reveals strong non-additive pumping–surge salinisation. • Coastal SWI management should jointly consider abstraction and episodic flooding.
