The requirements of global competition have made container terminal performance a critical focus, particularly through the optimization of stacking yard operation. With increasing international trade demands, effective yard management ensures efficient container handling, enabling terminals to compete more effectively in the global market. The objective of this paper is to increase the utilization of stacking yards in container terminals to improve port service performance. In this study, simulation is required to capture the dynamics of container movement within the port, supporting problem-solving in yard utilization. This study utilizes a system dynamics simulation method to capture the port operation in the stacking yard utilization for a container terminal with the constraints of yard capacity. The initial stage of the simulation provides an overview of the current conditions related to container movement within the terminal. This process is followed by the identification of key factors influencing the effectiveness of container flow, which directly impacts stacking yard utilization. In the final stage, various simulation scenarios are implemented to evaluate system behavior and determine the optimal strategy. The results highlight the optimal stacking yard utilization levels required to enhance overall port performance, offering practical insights for improving efficiency and competitiveness in container terminal operations. This article examines the impact of controlling gate-out and loading rates in optimizing the acceptable level of stacked containers, with simulation results serving as a basis for evaluating stacking yard operation aimed at improving container terminal service performance.
