• Existing NDVI-based DSSs perform poorly for high-NUE conventional and hybrid wheat. • Tailored models improved N management at both tillering and stem elongation. • N fertilization strategies should account for genotype-specific vigor differences. • Hybrid wheat showed a high yield potential and distinct N requirements. • Lower hybrid seeding density and high vigor require careful N management at tillering.
