• 3D model of the onset of Farallon plate subduction termination due to ridge-trench collision. • A slab window starts developing by 30 Ma, bounded by the migrating Mendocino and Rivera triple junctions. • Modeled upwelling mantle episodes broadly correlate with mafic volcanism across southwestern North America. • Our model is validated with subduction-related seismic features in the upper mantle.
