• A circular strategy for sludge upcycling and microalgal biofuel production is posed. • ATHT converts sludge into liquor fertilizers rich in phytohormones and nutrients. • Phytohormones mainly form via decarboxylation, oxidation and deamidation reactions. • SPs enhance the stress-resilient growth, nutrient removal and lipid accumulation of microalgae. • SPs upregulate microalgae photosynthesis, antioxidant and fatty acid synthesis genes.
