• Insect symbionts with highly reduced genomes lack canonical protein-based transcriptional regulatory machinery. • Small RNAs (sRNAs) represent an independent mechanism for post-transcriptional control in streamlined symbiont genomes. • Evidence for sRNA-mediated regulation has emerged across multiple insect–bacterial symbioses. • Integrative multi-omic approaches can resolve how gene regulation operates in these reduced systems.
