• Smartphone-based data revealed four distinct social media use phenotypes in young adults. • Phenotypes mapped meaningful onto problematic use and mental health constructs. • Self-esteem and loneliness were the strongest mediators of problematic use and mental health. • Phenotypes showed differential responsiveness to a social media detox intervention.
