• Social networks decrease from midlife (W1) to late adulthood (W2), ~15 years later. • This decrease is due to a larger decrease in peripheral (vs. close) relationships. • Social network change was independent of retirement and death of close others. • The decrease in peripheral relationships was linked to lower W2 inflammation, adjusting for W1 inflammation.
