• Full straw return significantly increased microbial necromass carbon and its contribution to soil organic C. • Bacterivores indirectly affect bacterial necromass C by influencing bacterial biomass and community composition. • Full straw return increased BNC by enhancing the carbon use efficiency of bacterivores. • Bacterivores may promote the accumulation of FNC by affecting the BNC.
