• Microbial taxonomic diversity rises with soil pH, but functional diversity decreases. • Soil microbiome shifts from A-strategy to Y-strategy under a threshold of soil pH 6.43. • A-strategists predominate in acidic soil and enhance microbial carbon acquisition. • Y-strategists favor neutral soil and promote long-term soil carbon sequestration. • Horizontal gene transfer in acidic soils boosts CAZyme dissemination.
