• A solar still–RED coupled system is proposed for decentralized desalination. • A passive solar still produces freshwater while regenerating salinity gradients. • A system-level model evaluates desalination and auxiliary energy recovery. • Solar conditions, flow rate, and RED stack number affect system behavior. • The system enables auxiliary electricity recovery from in situ salinity gradients.
