• Zn-Mg solid solution Ca2NaZn2-yMgyV3O12:0.02Cr3+ phosphors with Mg2+ doping showed PL intensity 207% of initial. • XRD and Raman spectra reveal Mg2+ doping promotes orderly structural transformation and enhanced rigidity. • DFT calculations confirm that Mg2+ optimizes the electron cloud around Cr3+, reducing non-radiative dissipation.
