Solid waste management is a key-issue for protecting the quality of environment and the potential of exploiting natural resources. This is particularly true in the case of surface mining areas, where enormous quantities of solid waste are produced. Based on their origin, most of this waste is characterized as industrial rather than domestic (i.e. collected from offices, canteens, etc). Its management according to the best available practices is necessary not only for preventing pollution events but also for refunding money by selling certain types of waste to certified recycling contractors. Furthermore, surface mining areas are often considered as ideal sites for solid waste disposal. However, very often the geological characteristics of mining sites require the implementation of expensive measures for the prevention of environmental damage. For the same reason, the development of an efficient system for the management of solid and hazardous waste produced from operating and maintenance activities is necessary for the protection of the various environmental constituents. The present contribution deals with all the aforementioned topics focusing on the implementation of the new regulatory framework proposed by the directives of the European Union that concern the management of waste produced from extractive industries and large thermal power plants as well as by the Law 2939/2001 and a series of Presidential Decrees that deal with the management of used oils, tires, and batteries, empty oil containers and end-of-life vehicles. The contribution includes also several examples of efficient management practices applied in the lignite-mining complex of West Macedonia, the larger earth-moving activity in the Balkans.
