• PtRu possesses the ability to fully hydrogenate alkenes, alkynes, benzene rings. • PtRu-tG13 gives 784.3 mL g−1 H2 uptake for 1,4-diphenylethynylbenzene at RT,1atm. • DFT reveals curvature effect on H migration exceeds composition effect. • Solvent engineering controls nanocatalyst nucleation and dispersion. • Excess EG reduces metal loading; proper EtOH balances dispersion, size, loading.
