• A novel reduced-order adjoint method for rapid hazardous source identification. • Computational cost is slashed as it scales with model order, not simulation time. • Multiple-input ROM surpasses single-input version in accuracy and practicality. • ROM outperforms full-order model in efficiency under non-idealized conditions. • Method accuracy is validated via wind tunnel experiments and high-fidelity CFD simulations.
