• A two-dimensional nonlinear diffusion-wave model with variable-exponent is reformulated into an equivalent integro-differential system using the convolution framework. • An efficient spatial two-grid compact difference method is proposed, extending its applications from constant-exponent models to problems with variable exponent. • The stability and convergence of this method are rigorously established under mild assumptions on the variable exponent α(t). • Numerical experiments demonstrate that this method preserves high-order accuracy while significantly reducing computational cost compared with other related methods.
