Abstract

In this issue of IEEE Internet Computing, we included articles that focus on important aspects of computing for sustainability. The first article argues that to enable sustainable computing, the computing sector will need to consider and integrate sustainability across multiple levels of the system stack. The next article focuses on quantifying and optimizing the carbon emissions of data transfers over wide-area networks, a significant but often overlooked source of emissions. Finally, our last article presents a vision for a new field of computational decarbonization that focuses on applying computational techniques to jointly optimize and reduce the lifecycle carbon emissions of complex computing and societal infrastructure systems.
