This paper describes Split Rendering over the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) in 3GPP 5G Advanced networks, as standardized in Release 19. Computer graphics (CG) applications, particularly Extended Reality (XR) applications, are computationally intensive and have strict latency requirements. Consumer mobile devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and netbooks, have limited processing power and energy capacity, restricting the quality and complexity of CG and XR services that can be delivered locally. Offloading compute and energy-intensive rendering tasks to the network offers a promising solution, provided a high level of Quality of Service (QoS) is maintained by the network between the server and client devices. IMS is a core subsystem of 3GPP networks that provides high QoS real-time voice and video services. The introduction of Data Channel (DC) capabilities in IMS enables deployment of new services that can benefit from this high QoS and compute resources in the network. The new split rendering over IMS standard provides service providers with a unified framework for deploying split-rendered applications that leverage IMS DC capabilities.
