• Zn oxidation drives U(VI) conversion in a spontaneous galvanic cell. • Spatially separated half-reactions avoid direct Zn–U contact. • Nernst analysis supports U(VI) reduction at low uranium concentrations. • ORR competes with U(VI) reduction and controls early pH evolution.
