• Amorphous Al2O3-modified Sm2O3 nanorod improved the copper dispersion. • Robust Cu+-OV-Sm2+ interfacial ensembles were formed. • Cu-based catalyst attained an impressively high H2 production rate in MSR reaction. • Cooperation of Cu+/OV-Sm2+ dual active sites contributed to efficient MSR reaction.
