• Stepwise rotating magnetic field technology homogenizes joints and strengthens strength–ductility synergy. • Magnetic field-assisted FSW refines grains, increases dislocation density and significantly raises total dislocation strain energy. • Magnetic field induces spin-state transitions, enabling dislocation depinning, multiplication, and slip activation.
