• Z-scheme mechanism driven by intrinsic interfacial electric field. • Robust HER/OER activity under neutral conditions achieved. • High STH efficiency (42.40%) beyond conventional 2D photocatalysts. • Robust HER/OER activity maintained under strain and electric field. • Revealed STH saturation governed by band-edge alignment.
