• Facile gradient ionic crosslinking produces robust chitosan hydrogel electrolytes. • Gradient architecture governs ion transport and enhances structural stability. • GCME-0.5M exhibits the best electrochemical performance among all GCMEs. • GCME-0.5M achieves an ionic conductivity of 5.41 × 10−4 S cm−1. • EDLC-0.5M demonstrates stable operation of 51,500 charge-discharge cycles.
