Study on Bio-Inspired Morphing Wing UAV for Improved Flight Performance

Since the 1930s, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAVs) have become a vital technology in both military and civilian fields. However, conventional UAVs are limited by aerodynamic constraints, making them less adaptable to diverse operational requirements. This study proposes a bio-inspired morphing wing UAV designed to improve maneuverability, agility, and energy efficiency. Optimal wing configurations were derived using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses and optimization algorithms. The wing shape modes were further implemented within an autopilot system for autonomous flight experiments. As a result, power consumption was reduced by up to 12.5%, and maneuverability and agility were enhanced. These findings demonstrate that bio-inspired morphing wing UAVs can achieve superior flight performance under various operational conditions.
