• Developed a real-time micrometer-resolution CT-in situ loading observation system. • Clarified microcrack evolution mechanisms and identified typical failure modes. • Quantified CT-resolvable crack geometry using 2D area and 3D volume metrics. • Built a simplified model for closure, tensile suppression and shear localization.
