• Flow structures of Marangoni convection inside evaporating droplets were captured using a three-dimensional numerical model. • “Phase diagrams” for various instability patterns on the droplet surface were established. • Synergistic effects of substrate thermal and geometric properties on Marangoni convection instabilities were analyzed.
