• Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were found in aerobic metal-contaminated soil. • Topsoil SRB are responsible for Zn and Cd transformation into reduced phases. • Topsoil and bottom SRB differ significantly in abundance and community structure. • SRB activity is reflected in changes in δ34S-SO4, sulfate, and bicarbonate concentration. • Sulfide ions were low due to ZnCdS precipitation (topsoil) and oxidation (bottom).
