• S/P co-doped cattle manure biochar (SBC) significantly reduced bioavailable Cd in soil. • SBC significantly improved soil quality and reduced Cd accumulation in spinach. • Potential ecological functions related to nutrient cycling was enriched by SBC. • Optimal SBC dosage has dual effects of soil remediation and soil improvement.
