• Investigated structural, electronic, and mechanical properties of GaN/Hf2CO2 using first-principles calculations. • The GaN/Hf2CO2 heterojunction exhibits excellent photovoltaic effects. • The GaN/Hf2CO2 is a Type-II heterojunction, which can promote the effective separation of photogenerated carriers.
