• Ti3C2Tx MXene layer is assembled on Al anode via facile solution-immersion. • The MXene layer suppresses HER and facilitates efficient anodic dissolution. • MXene-Al anode delivers a high specific capacity of 2216 mAh g−1. • Cyclic operational lifetime is extended by ∼33% with stable discharge voltages.
