• Surface defect-enriched ZnO/ZnMn2O4/C nanocomposite for dual-mode melatonin detection. • Melatonin enables self-validating ECL “turn-on” and colorimetric “turn-off” detection. • Integrated with smartphone and hydrogel beads for both ultratrace lab analysis and on-site rapid screening.
