• An eco-friendly method for adjusting the EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE). • Free-standing GO and rGO films by controlled γ-irradiation at low/high doses. • γ-irradiation can precisely adjust the oxidation/reduction equilibrium of GO/rGO. • GO films exhibit low EMI shielding capabilities across the 8–12 GHz range. • rGO films exhibit outstanding shielding performance, achieving over 95% EMI SE.
