Abstract

Waste playing cards (WPC), as cellulose-based solid waste from the entertainment sector, exacerbate resource waste and pollution through landfill or incineration, however research on their utilization for hydrogen production via pyrolysis remains largely unexplored. This study explores the catalytic pyrolysis of WPC for hydrogen-rich syngas production using a novel bimetallic NiFeCaO catalyst derived from waste eggshells, with efficient hydrogen generation achieved through a two-stage fixed-bed reactor system. The results show that the optimal pyrolysis temperature was determined to be 900°C, at which NiFeCaO exhibited superior catalytic performance, yielding a maximum hydrogen production rate of 278 μmol·gWPC−1·s−1, significantly higher than that of no catalyst (43 μmol·gWPC−1·s−1) and CaO (68 μmol·gWPC−1·s−1). The excellent catalytic performance of NiFeCaO was attributed to its well-developed microporous structure, facilitating the diffusion of short-chain hydrocarbon intermediates, and the synergistic effects of Fe and Ni in enhancing hydrogen conversion and suppressing carbon deposition. The reaction mechanisms involving transition metal bimetallic catalysts in the pyrolysis of WPC were investigated through TG-IR and Py-GC/MS characterization. It provides a new, effective recycling method for WPC for H2 production through catalytic pyrolysis technology.
