• Synergistic effect of ZnO and plasma jet on ATZ degradation was studied. • The maximum degradation and E. Y were found to be 94.24% and 0.62 g kW−1 h−1 in an optimal condition. • ATZ degradation was mainly facilitated by O3 and .•OH via de-chlorination, de-alkylation and de-amination hydroxylation. • Toxicity of ATZ after plasma treatment was mitigated based on growth analysis of wheat plant.
