Synchronous Generator Emulation Using Output Matching Control Through Feedback Linearization

Micro-machines possessing parameters similar to those of large synchronous machines can be used to analyze the dynamic performance of the large machines in the laboratory. However, the scalability of the emulation experimental platform is constrained, given that a micro-machine can replicate solely the dynamics of a single turbo-generator. In this paper, an output matching controller based on the output feedback linearization technique has been proposed to emulate different synchronous machines on a single laboratory micro-machine. Synchronous generators with ratings of 128 MVA, 192 MVA, and 247.5 MVA have been emulated on a 5 kVA micro-machine. The IEEE 1.1 synchronous generator model is used as the reference machine model to be emulated. The dynamics observed in terminal voltage and the generator speed of the reference machine are emulated on the micro-machine. The efficacy of the proposed emulation approach is validated under both small and large disturbances created within the experimental testbed.
