• Sulfolane replaces toxic solvents to form green cosolvent system degrading anhydride-cured epoxy. • Hydrogen-bond synergy of sulfolane/EG enables 99% ester bond cleavage. • Recovered carbon fibers retain well-preserved structure and > 94% of tensile strength.
