• Y–Ba co-doped ZnO photocatalyst were synthesized by precipitation. • Co-doping reduced crystallite size and increased surface area to 57.1 m2/g. • The photocatalyst achieved a higher rate constant than pristine ZnO. • The enhancement is due to the synergy of defects and surface properties.
