• Synergistic effects of nano-SiO2 and PVA fibers on HVFA composites are studied. • Optimal mix (1.5% NS + 1.0% PVA) boosts fracture energy by 3940.8% and toughness by 204.2%. • Peridynamic simulations can reasonably reproduce experimental load-CMOD curves. • Nano-SiO2 strengthens fiber-matrix interface, shifting failure from pull-out to rupture.
