• A novel CdZnS/TiN modified ZnO photoanode was designed to improve the performance of PEC. • The synergistic effect of CdZnS and TiN NPs enhances the visible light utilization of ZnO. • The type-II heterostructure of CdZnS/ZnO promotes charge separation. • TiN NPs enhance carrier concentration through plasmon induced hot electron injection.
