• Systematic comparison of Ce, La, and Ni promoters for Co/10ZrAl catalysts. • Ni promotion enhanced catalyst reducibility and syngas production. • 1.5 wt.% Ni gave the highest CH4 conversion and H2 and CO yields. • Excessive Ni loading reduced catalytic activity by partial site blocking. • Ni outperformed Ce and La in syngas production performance.
