As a class of well-recognized chromic materials, viologen-based coordination polymers have attracted significant research interest due to their structural versatility and potential applications. This study reports the syntheses, structural characterization, and chromic properties of two Cadmium(II) and Copper(II) viologen-based coordination polymers, formulated as {[Cd(cpbpy)2(H2O)2]& sdot;(NO3)2 & sdot;(H2O)2}n (1), {[Cu(cpbpy)2(H2O)2]& sdot; (NO3)2 & sdot;(H2O)8.4}n (2) (cpbpy = N-(3-carboxypyridin-5-yl)-4,4 '-bipyridinium). In both compounds, cpbpy molecules exhibit different coordination modes. In 1, cpbpy molecules bridge Cd(II) ions via carboxylate O atoms and terminal pyridyl N atoms to generate a layer structure. However, cpbpy molecules in 2 link Cu(II) ions via carboxylate O and nicotinate N atoms, giving rise to a similar layer structure. As a consequence of the presence of electron-deficient viologen moieties, 1 exhibits a reversible photochromic behavior driven by UV light-induced electron transfer, whereas 2 displays a crystalline-to-amorphous transformation in response to mechanical grinding, accompanied by distinct chromic behavior.
