• A phosphorus- and fluorene-containing copolyarylate series was synthesized. • PPD improved solubility and lowered Tg while retaining high thermal stability. • PPD redistributed backbone-derived volatile pyrolysis products. • Phosphorus-rich residues became denser and more continuous.
